Becoming an Instructor of the Baby Signs program means becoming a business owner.  If you are already one then you probably won't need to read the following, however if you have never owned a business before then there are a few things you need to consider before taking the plunge.

Independent Contractor vs. Employee

To make it easy to understand how a Independent Contractor conducts their work, take a look at the following table.  The first coloum relates to the type of areas employment is made up of, the following two coloums indicate whether or not an employee or independent contractor conducts themselves in that area of work.

Work Area

Do I have control over the way I perform a task?

Do I supply/maintain my own tools or equipment?

Do I have standard hours?

Am I paid on task completion, or wages based on time

worked?

Do I incur loss or receive profit from the job?

Do I accept responsibility for any defective, inappropriate

or remedial work that was my doing?

Am I free to work for others at the same time?

Do I accept the work lasts for the term of each particular

task or contract?

Do I understand the arrangement between us as a

contract of services?

Is tax deducted from the hirer for my pay?

Do I provide my own public liability, indeminity and

accident insurance cover?

Do I receive paid holidays or sick leave?

Do I provide tax invoice for payment?

Do I file GST returns?
