Auslan & Baby Sign Language

Baby Signs® is specifically designed for hearing babies aged 0-3 years old - using a mixture of signs that are easy for baby's hands to manipulate and gestures that are symbolic in nature - such as hands placed on the chest near the heart to symbolise the concept "love".  It makes this baby sign language a universal language which has successfully been used worldwide.

Therefore the Baby Signs ® program uses natural and simplistic gestures that babies can manipulate, rather than complex signs found in adult based signing programs.

Communication Tool for a Short Period

Baby Sign Language should be simple enough to be useful for the short period of time before toddlers begin to communicate with words. This encompasses a period of approximately 6 -36 months.

Temporary Signs

Children naturally drop the signs as they are able to verbalise the word, so the “baby signs” are intended to be temporary.  The exception to this is if a child or family has a specific need to continue their signing journey beyond speech development, then traditional adult sign language would be recommended.

Flexible Enough to Incorporate own Signs and AUSLAN

The key to the success of Baby Signs ® is the flexibility and ease of use to adapt the program to suit specific families needs.  With this in mind, Baby Signs Australia is dedicated to presenting more AUSLAN products and options for parents to use AUSLAN signs with their babies.  Please check here again for further updates.
